Alex Thomson ‘surfs’ the keel of Hugo Boss in a well pressed suit.*

Every so often, Alex Thomson arranges a photographic stunt for his main sailing sponsor – Hugo Boss. But how do mere mortals look as polished and uncreased as the Open 60 star?

You’ve just spent a week in the salt air, trimming, helming, racing or just cruising from bay mooring to marina. Now it’s time for the prize giving. A posh affair – jackets and maybe even ties required. Too many different occasions – sailing, beach bars, yacht club parties… but only one bag.

We’ve got you covered. The Pilote team have found a good looking, functional, duffel bag come backpack that keeps your suit or jacket or dress shirt ready for the big, end of regatta bash.

P I L O T E Nautical Flag T-Shirt

p i l o t e flag tshirt

This tee is for all those vexillology fans, or those who just love a classic nautical theme.

Of course all the yacht racing fans will instantly know the significance of each flag – because you always read the sailing instructions and know which flag means – ‘wear your life jacket’ or ‘no more racing today.’

In fact, we had to look up a few of the letters that make up Pilote. According to our research. three of the flags on this t-shirt are used in yacht racing, the following meanings apply…

P – Normal preparatory signal – no starting penalties are in effect. A boat over the line at the start can return through the line or round an end but must keep clear of boats not returning.

I – The Round-an-End Rule 30.1 will be in effect. A boat over the line during the minute before the start must sail to the pre-start side of the line around either end before starting.

L – When displayed afloat means: Come within hail or follow this boat. When displayed ashore means: A notice to competitors has been posted.

Custom Clothing for Sailing Teams & Crew

two sailors custom tshirt for sailing

Richmond Upon Thames, United Kingdom. Pilote will give Sailing Teams, Clubs and Regattas the ability to customise fashion and casual wear and sell it online to fans. For some teams, this could create a much needed revenue stream to help fund campaigns.

Merchandise that can be branded includes T-Shirts, Polo Shirts, Caps and rash-vests – and there is no minimum order.

Sailors, especially young sailors are focused on getting results and winning on the water. They might not have time to build an online store or leverage the power of Instagram to monetise their fan-base. Why should merchandising be available only to the big America’s Cup teams and professional crews?

David Fuller – Founder, Pilote

It doesn’t matter if you are sailing a 1 person dinghy or are part of a TP52 campaign, our business model means that you don’t have to make an up front investment to kit out your shore-crew, friends and family or fans. We can print or embroider a wide range of products.

If you are in the US or Europe – delivery could be as little as 2 days. We can ship internationally though, so if you are already planning for racing in Sydney or Auckland in next Summer, we can get your gear to you in 14-20 days.

10 years ago, you needed to spend a ton of money on setting up patterns, warehousing and distribution, understanding customs and having minimum orders. We allow sailing teams to create special one-off shirts for specific races, seasons and Limited Edition runs for VIP fans.
